my dad is always smoking what should i do to get him to stop smoking should i hide his cigerates?

You can’t stop someone from smoking. It is something they have to decide on their own. It takes a lot of will power and you have to have your mind set to it. They have to do it for themselves and not anyone else. The best thing you could do is support him if he decides to quit. I went to the Doctor to see what it takes to quit and he told me I would have to be away from all cigarettes, smokers and ash trays for at least 10 days (if it was cold turkey). The patch really worked for me sister, but it was still really hard for her. She just wanted to quit soooo bad that she made it through. Cigarettes are just as addicting as heroin.

I interested in success or failure stories of those who have used Chantix to stop smoking.

I have been on chantix for 5 weeks and I quit 9 days ago! YEAHHH!!! It is a miracle! I have had a cig everyday since grade school which is almost a 25 year habit.

It reduces (almost eliminates) the craving for a cigarette once you get 2 mg a day in your system for awhile. 1 mg in the morning and 1 mg in the afternoon. You just don’t think about them. The receptors that crave the nicotine are blocked.

If you make the effort to put the cigs down chantix works. I found the hardest thing to do was change my habits. I could not imagine not smoking after I eat but it all fell into place.

Insurance suprisingly paid $110.00 for 30 day supply leaving me with $20 to pay. Usually prescribed for 3 months. After your done taking it the cravings don’t come back.

At first there is slight stomach upset but it passes. Some people have odd dreams but I did not notice a difference. It is worth it. UNBELIEVABLE! It really works!

Good luck to your family member.

One of the biggest obstacles you can face when trying to figure out how to stop smoking weed is how to overcome the social pressures of the task. This can come in many forms from friends and family who smoke to those that do not and not to mention the complex social interactions between all of this with you at the center trying to quit!

So how do you deal with these problems, keep your friends and family happy and still manage to quit? The answer lies with empathy

The ability to feel what others may be feeling and to be able to judge what they might be thinking is an invaluable tool in navigating social issues. Since most of the time the problems comes from revealing you are trying to quit to friends or family that are still using pot, the way you approach this and how you need to change your social dynamics is where you need a good sense of empathy.

For instance, a common situation is the worry that hanging with your friends who smoke pot will tempt you to smoke but telling them might make things awkward to the degree they ostracize you from the group. This is a reasonable fear but why they would do this is what you need to focus on. In most situations when someone reacts badly to your announcement it is because they feel you are judging their lifestyle by wanting to change yours from them … there is an instant disconnect and hurt feelings.

This can be avoided with the right approach which must be dealt with by wording it a way that does not condemn them and their habits but puts the focus on your need to do something different rather than saying smoking is a problem but it is just a problem for YOU. This can sometimes get you allies who might have been thinking the same for some time or might gain support even in words and encouragement or even being polite and not offering you joints or not smoking near you.

Understanding the viewpoint of other people in your social circle is essential to be able to quit with help and support while retaining friends and family bonds.

I am not normally a big fan of propaganda no matter how noble the cause, but I have to admit that the stop smoking ads have worked. Almost all of the people I know who used to smoke have either quit smoking or tried to. The problem is that many attempts are unsuccessful. I know people who tried everything. They tried quitting cold turkey, using the patch, and using smoking cessation therapy, but nothing has worked for them. It seems like either you can quit smoking or you can’t – or so I used to think. Now I realize that the choice is yours.

You see, it took me at least three smoking cessation therapy courses before I really quit. One of them involved smoking cessation hypnotherapy, and promised to be a miracle cure. They believed that by taking responsibility for smoking out of my hands, they could make it easy for me to quit by tapping into the power of my subconscious.

The results of that course of smoking cessation therapy, however, were not so good. As a matter of fact, although initially it helped me to quit smoking, eventually I did quite the opposite. Over the long run, I was actually smoking more after the hypnotherapy session.

That is when I realized that smoking cessation therapy doesn’t work – at least not for me. A lot of people swear by smoking cessation therapy, but I needed a more independent method to quit smoking. You see, a smoking cessation treatment did not give me responsibility over my own actions. I did not want someone to babysit me, to coach me, or to talk me out of smoking. I wanted to do it on my own. When I was ready to do it on my own, I did not need smoking cessation therapy.

One of the best things I ever did was to quit smoking cold turkey. I used no patches, no gum, no therapy, and no support group. It was my decision and my decision alone to quit, and so it should be my responsibility and my responsibility alone. My smoking cessation therapists always advised me that I should set reasonable goals for myself.

They told me I should quit one step at a time by tapering down. But, when I followed the smoking cessation therapy advice, I found that I was always tempted to have one more cigarette than I should. Once I knew that I should have none, however, there was no room to talk myself into one.

In order to stop smoking cigarettes, non-medical natural stop smoking methods are widely available. A person does not have to use drugs or nicotine replacement therapy if desired, or they can be used in combination with them. Acupuncture, along with the drugs, Zyban or Chantix, or even with the nicotine gums, are excellent combinations that can be used if needed. Drinking many natural juices will not only curb the dry mouth that will develop, but is very healthy for the body to strengthen it.

By using either the natural stop smoking methods alone or the medical methods and aids, the outlook of its success will depend entirely on our will power, sheer determination, and desire to quit smoking. It is pretty simple – if you do not want to quit, then you will not – no matter which smoking aids you use.

We need the support of our friends and family members now, more than ever, to help us from the beginning when we begin to stop smoking. It is at this time when our pain and withdrawal symptoms will at their worst. We need to remove all our ashtrays and cigarette lighters in our home, vehicles, and office – any reminder of smoking that may tempt us to sway “just a little bit.” These are reminders of our smoking days, and have been known to induce smokers to start smoking again.

Another good move will be to stop visiting clubs, bars, casinos, certain dining establishments, or hotels where the rooms are filled with cigarette smoke. Even in our office and in some cases – our home, we must ban people from smoking in our presence. We should consider beginning a new hobby that may keep us busy for hours. For instance, we could buy some of the new computer games, such as the new Sony Playstation2 or the newer version coming out in November. There are games online which are less expensive, where we can play for hours to kill the urge to smoke. They are an addiction to themselves, so we are replacing one bad addiction with one not quite as hazardous to our health. The object is to stay busy, and not think of the cigarette we want to smoke.

A stop date is obviously needed in order to motivate us to quit smoking. We could even make a poster, listing all the reasons why we need to give up smoking. Some of the prominent reasons may list the hazardous health concerns we could develop, or we could list our family members due to second-hand smoke inhalation. Our clothes and fabrics tend to develop a nicotine smoke smell within our home, which we as smokers usually cannot smell. Dirty ashtrays fill our tables for others to view, along with nicotine stained teeth and fingers. Walls and ceilings become yellow due to the smoke from the cigarettes.

All of these can be listed on the poster, why can be hung in prominent view for us to see on a daily basis as a motivator.Group activity, especially involving non-smokers, is another useful way of staying away from cigarettes, as they will support any weak moments you may develop. You do not feel the urge if you do not see any of your friends smoking. You will find that you come out a fitter and tougher person once you win the battle against smoking naturally.

Quit smoking hypnosis programs address behaviors that quit smoking drugs don’t. Drugs might help you get through the physical nicotine withdrawal symptoms more easily than quitting cold turkey. But if you really want to quit smoking, hypnosis programs do a better job long-term

One of the reasons for the low success rate of non-smoking drugs long-term, is that they don’t address your “smoking rituals”. If you’ve ever tried these stop smoking drugs yourself, you’ll know what I’m talking about

Sure, you slap a patch on your arm or your hip, and it takes the edge off of the nicotine cravings. but you still have the feeling that you should be smoking when you’re sitting in that favorite chair and where you see that cut crystal ashtray sitting on the table, or when you finish a meal.

And you actually feel physically uncomfortable when you don’t perform the smoking rituals that you become used to. When you reach into your pocket and you don’t pull out a pack of smokes, or when you reach into your purse, and you don’t pull out that fancy lighter, it feels like there’s something missing. You just feel uneasy.

Now, if you’re a long time smoker, what you do to make yourself feel better whenever you feel anxious or uneasy? Right. You have a smoke…or two or three…and you calm down and feel much better.

But if you’re trying to quit, now you’ve got a real dilemma. If you used to smoke one pack a day, that’s 20 cigarettes, you are now feeling uncomfortable and anxious at least 20 times a day. But you can’t have a cigarettes to make you feel better!

But wait, there’s more. How about all of those other times during the day that you feel anxious or upset, when you couldn’t have had a cigarette anyway. You know, like when your boss is yelling at your about the report that’s overdue, or a nicotine craving hits in the middle of church service.

You used to at least be comfort yourself by the thought of having a smoke as soon as you got out of the office or the church. But now you can’t even take comfort from looking forward to your future smoking time!

That’s exactly where a good self hypnosis program to help you quit smoking comes in. You can think of it as a training program to help you learn to become a non-smoker again. After all, there was a time way back in your past when you didn’t smoke.

There was a time, at least when you were a child, when you didn’t smoke when you felt nervous. You might have sucked your thumb or chewed your nails. But you didn’t smoke. So you know you can successfully live without smoking.

A lot of people use the smoking cessation drugs, like the patch or nasal sprays, to help them get through the physical nicotine withdrawal. They are designed to wean you gradually off of nicotine. Over a period of several weeks, you get smaller and smaller amounts, until you finally don’t use them at all.

But many people also use hypnosis to help them get through the mental withdrawal of losing their smoking rituals. They combine hypnosis with the quit smoking drugs. They take advantage of all the help they can get.

Smoking cessation hypnosis programs can also help you develop healthy new habits to replace your old smoking rituals. So when you feel uncomfortable or restless during the day, you can use a healthy response to make yourself feel better, instead of smoking.

Over time, the healthy techniques that you learn during a quit smoking hypnosis program replace your old bad habits. And that’s the way people successfully stay off of cigars or cigarettes forever.

There is substantial evidence underlining weight gain as the main concern smokers cite as a reason for not stopping smoking. This is amongst the many other excuses smokers give for putting off stopping smoking. Other examples include the inability to cope with stress or a fear that they will not be able to enjoy an upcoming party or their life in general without their trusty cigarettes.

Smoking is an addiction to nicotine but most smokers, and non-smokers for that matter, wrongly think of it as a habit. This is not the case. The urge to smoke is so overwhelming; it simply cannot just be a habit.

The suffering that smokers must go through in order to be able to smoke, is evidence as to why smoking is not a habit, but is an addiction. Smokers cannot inhale any other form of smoke, other than tobacco smoke, without coughing and spluttering or even being sick.

Once smokers come to realise the addiction to nicotine is the reason they smoke, it becomes easier to learn how to stop smoking without weight gain.

Smokers think they enjoy smoking as much, if not more, than eating. However, there is a very subtle difference between smoking and eating and understanding this is the key to learning how to stop smoking without weight gain. Read this two statements:

“When you are hungry, your body tells you so by giving you hunger pangs. You eat and you are rewarded with the discomfort subsiding.”

“When you want a cigarette, your body tells you by giving you a craving. You smoke and you are rewarded with the discomfort subsiding.”

When you read these two statements as a smoker, you are probably in full agreement with them. But, the second one is wrong and that is the secret of how to stop smoking without weight gain.

What you think is that you ‘want a cigarette’ when in actual fact, you want some nicotine. It is simply that over the years, you have wanted nicotine, had a cigarette to get it and then been rewarded with the discomfort of the craving subsiding. What has happened is that you have subconsciously replaced the connection of getting nicotine and the craving dying and having a cigarette and the craving dying.

In your mind, you see the cigarette as the thing you desire when in actual fact it is the nicotine. The cigarette is simply the delivery system. This is why pharmaceutical companies (wrongly) think nicotine patches and gum can help smokers quit.

So how does knowing this help you learn how to stop smoking without weight gain? Well, the point is that when you stop smoking, you will find that the craving for a cigarette (well nicotine) is very similar to the craving for food. It is a hollow empty feeling. Whilst you struggle with your willpower to overcome the urge to smoke, you will try and subdue the craving for nicotine with something that ‘might work’ – eating.

Smokers often turn to food to settle the craving for nicotine. This is where you end up gaining weight because you are wrongly trying to settle your hunger for nicotine by doing what seems right when you hunger for food. Your calorie intake goes through the roof and you pile on the pounds!

When you recognise that your apparent increased appetite is just you mixing up cravings for food with cravings for nicotine, it becomes easier for you to control your response – i.e. whether you chose to eat or not. Once you have mastered this understanding, you are on the right track of how to stop smoking without weight gain.

my boyfriend has decided, seriously.. to quit smoking. i dont mean cigarettes, i mean herb, so this is going to be hard for him. i want to give him support, but whenever i try to think of something to say, it sounds dumb in my head.

any ideas to show i love him and am here for him during this period in his life?

thanks <3

Just be nice to him, if he has any kind of withdraws from it he’ll be moody and have a short fuse. Keep him busy too. Find things to do where he wouldn’t be able to smoke weed.
