It’s So hard to stop something you have been doing so long. Please don’t criticize me. I just want help. I’ve tried several times to stop smoking. What should I do.?

well when i was trying to quit i started eating to replace it then i started to get over weight so i tryed different things and the thing i found that helped me the most was sunflower seeds they dont make you gain weight really and when you get the urge just snack on them get the ones with the shells though plus it takes our mind off smoking plus grapefruit juice flushes out the nicotine out of your system and big red gum takes the urge down too hope this heps good luck

i need some serious help to stop smoking. I dont want to go to any support groups I want to do it on my own. It is starting to make me sick at my stomach when I smoke is there a cheap way to stop or any advice anyone can give me. I am only 26 years old I would like to live 50 more years.

I quit 4 yrs ago. Decided I really wanted to quit, so one day in the gas station instead of buying a pack of smokes for $3.50 I got a pack of Winterfresh gum for 99 cents. When I wanted a smoke I chewed gum. Not nicotine gum cuz that is still giving you the chemical you are trying to break your addiction to. First couple of weeks are rough, but if you really want to quit and can go 3 months, I bet the next time you walk by a smoker and smell how they smell after a cigerette you will be SOOOOO glad you stopped.

Just my personal opinion but using the patch or nicotine gum to stop smoking is like trying to stop using heroin by doing smaller amounts of heroin. Doesn’t help. Best to go ahead and go through the detox and get it out of your system. You will always have times that you crave a cigerette. So you need to REALLY want to quit. Looking at the list of things added to tobacco was a good motivator for me.

when you want a smoke pick one thing on that list and look it up to see what it is and what it is mainly used for. You will be surprised at the stuff in there.

You have to want to very badly in the first place, but there is no substitute for will power, there are many things however that certainly help some people go that ‘extra mile’, hypnosis, acupuncture, dummy cigarettes etc, you have to find the one that ‘works’ for you.

For me it was when James Callaghan as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Harold Wilson’s government, on budget day, put twenty cigarettes up to five shillings (25p), I never bought a packet since.

Lets think this through. Raising taxes is supposed to do two things:

1) Get people to stop smoking.
2) Raise money for health care.

If #1 is successful, what happens to the health care funding?
Remember the funding often goes to unrelated issues like child health care, not always to smoke prevention.

No, it is suppose to

get people to stop smoking

reduce the cost of health care

this is the logic (agree or not, i really don’t care and I am a smoker)

the majority of health cost are due to smoking, so if you stop people from smoking, you reduce health care cost. but….

you also reduce the need for tobacco (the number one cash crop for Kentucky, and the second cash crop for North Carolina).

reduce the number of factory workers at plants that package cigarettes (they have a big plant in Greensboro,NC employs about 2,000 people.

I think the tax money will end up funding something stupid, like the money that states got from the tobacco lawsuit, it was used as normal state funds and not for health care.

My stepson is trying to stop smoking with the help of a battery operated "Lobewhacker" device. If he feels like a ciggy he clips the small cables onto his ear lobes and it administers a small electric shock, you just increase the power daily until you eventually can do without cigarettes, trouble is, he`s had the machine six months now and it`s been adjusted up so much
that when he uses it his hair stands on end, should he try something else?
Josephro:
He stopped smoking 4 weeks ago and now he can go more holidays with what he`s saved? FFS how many a day was he smoking? Hundreds?
He wrote to the company, they suggested he upgrade to the latest aid ,
they call it the" maxiwhacker"it works in a similiar way but without ear lobe clamps, it`s a chair you strap yourself into, plus it`s guaranteed to work.

If i need a jump start i know where to come.

Congratulations on becoming a non smoker!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wash every thing including all hard surfaces in your apartment, walls, cabinets, tvs, computers, etc. Shampoo carpets, wash linens, curtains. Febreze and use air fresheners, and open the windows and let your apartment air out. And don’t forget to throw out all your old stinky ash trays.

Concentrate on the room you smoked in the most, and then move on to the rest of the apartment.

Good luck.

Was it the government or just companies? Also if it wasn’t the governement then why wouldn’t they stop the fake doctors telling people that it was a good idea?

They are making money from being against them:

the major cigarette companies agreed to settle state lawsuits against them by making annual payments to 46 states, DC and the U.S. Territories that will total more than $200 billion in just the first 25 years. Prior to the MSA, the major cigarette companies entered into similar settlement agreements, with even larger per-capita payments, with the four other states (MS, FL, TX, MN). Through 2005, the cigarette companies have already made tobacco payments to the states of more than $55 billion, including $7.5 billion in 2005 alone.

I gave up 9 weeks ago with the book "The easy way to stop smoking" by Allen Carr,it has been an absolute doddle,i cant believe it.

He has a 53% success rate, nicotine replacement only has a 26% success rate.

The book only costs £8-99,not bad eh?

I try to convince my husband to stop smoking because its scares the crap out of me. He’s been smoking since he was 15 and he is now 29. Its going to kill him while he’s still young and that really scares me bad. He wants to quit but I can only imagine how hard it is because I have tried for my entire life to lose these 20 extra pounds to no avail. We are trying the nicotine replacements, but it reminds of diet pills as a quick fix that doesn’t work. Any insight or suggestions would be useful. Thank you.

Wow! Yes, this is a VERY difficult situation you are both dealing with! I can totally relate because I myself am 26 and have smoked since I was 13. I have recently quit smoking, but I am also very overweight. I don’t really have any solid advice to give to you except that your boyfriend is absolutely doing the right thing by quitting smoking. It will surely help prolong his life. If I had to choose though, I would say that they are equally tough things to beat. Good luck!
