Why is it so difficult to take that first step – that leap of faith to stop smoking easily?
The First Step is the scariest; this is when the fear is generated – the one all of the               so-called experts talk about when they discuss smoking.
Why is it so difficult to set your resolve to stop smoking? All smokers agree that they have had the thought that they should try to stop but this thought never goes anywhere. Why is that? Very simple Fear! All smokers are afraid of what they visualize as the long thought out and difficult processes that are involved in Stopping Smoking.
They are told that it is very difficult to Stop Smoking but I am here to tell you that is not true. It is simply not true. It is not difficult to stop smoking, in fact it is easy to stop but smokers are constantly told it is difficult by our governments, the medical community, our friends, our family, and ourselves.
Smokers are afraid of the unknown as everyone one is; you know that, but once you’ve taken that first step, it gets easier. The fear goes away – it’s replaced with relief. In fact, once you get over that first step, stopping smoking is, in fact, easy. It is not difficult. I even guarantee it.
I smoked for over 35 miserable years; I know what I am talking about. I lost my lower legs as a result of my smoking. I learned the hard way about what can happen if you don’t stop.
But the really scary thing is that even losing my legs didn’t stop me from smoking. It took me another seven years to finally quit permanently. That is because cigarettes controlled me I didn’t control them.
During this period of time, after my amputations, I studied and studied the phenomenon of smoking. I finally discovered the secret to quitting smoking. I can tell you straight up that without this secret you too will have a tough time stopping smoking.
It wasn’t until I took that first step that I finally learned the Secret to Quitting Smoking. Now you can have the benefit of what I learned.
But knowing the secret is still not enough. Everyone needs some help with the process of stopping. Once you seek my help you will soon find out that it very easy to stop smoking.
We can’t ask them, but I know that the 440,000 Americans and 45,000 Canadians who have died and those who will die each and every year from smoking-related diseases would rather have taken that first step before it was too late.
So, why do you think it’s so difficult to take that first step – that leap of faith . . . and how can I help you to decide to take it?
***There are 10 primary reasons why people do take that first step – that leap of faith to stop smoking easily.
Want to know what the first step is?  Get The Secret To Quitting Smoking. It is
available here FREE!  Your first step is to read and re-read this report.
What could be simpler? The First step is to get something for FREE? Easy enough huh?

Having Said That – There are 10 reasons why people do take that first step – that leap of faith – to stop smoking easily.

1.    Sometimes, knowledge of the consequences of smoking – like lung cancer, heart disease, throat cancer, losing one’s legs (yes, it’s a real possibility) – can scare you into it. Maybe one of your parents or siblings, or friends is dying or died of it;  this provides the necessary incentive for some, actually for many.

2.    Some begin to see that smoking is costing them a lot of money for something they do not like to do.

3.    Others can, and will, argue that smoking is enjoyable, and that it’s worth the consequences. To that I would ask, “Do you want your kids to smoke?” 100% of you would say “No! Definitely not!”  Why not? If you enjoy it so much, don’t you want your kids to enjoy it as well? Well, I’m sure you know the answer to that. And after answering it some will try to stop.

4.    Some people take that first step in response to a threat: your spouse says they’ll leave -although this seldom works; your boss threatens to fire you – this can work well for a short while; other serious or not so serious threats sometimes work, but not often.

5.    Some just require noticing a slight distress as a result of their smoking: their breathing is more difficult; their blood pressure begins to climb; maybe they started an exercise program and were troubled by the effects of their smoking.

6.    Some begin to realize they don’t like themselves very much as a smoker who is under the control of cigarettes.

7.    Or don’t like being treated as second-class citizens.

8.    Or can’t handle the guilt of smoking.

9.    Or don’t like the fact that their friends- especially wives or girlfriends or your kids constantly remind them that they stink and they are dirty.

10.     Or even something as simple as not being able to get an erection at an appropriate time – and learning it was most likely caused by a lack of good circulation as a result of your smoking. Trust me – that does it for more guys than you can count.
I want you to know that as a result of what I’ve learned from my own experience with finally stopping smoking, my major purpose in life has become – to help all smokers in this world to stop smoking too…And easily too!

Stopping Smoking

We are told constantly how bad it is to smoke and we should give up. How many times have you heard from non smokers

“Oh that games killing you and burning a hole in your pocket you should stop”.

Now if you are like I was you probably wanted to use abusive language at these people and tell them it’s not as easy as they like to think. I sometimes used to look at them while they were telling me the “horrible things “ that smoking was doing to my body and imagine rolling them up into a nice fat rollup.

Anyway to the point.  If you’re a smoker you know as well as I do that it is not easy, It took me 8 attempts over 6 years to finally kick the habit and those that claim it is easy should think again. People who want to stop smoking more than anything else need encouragement and a solid reason to give up as well as deep down wanting to give up.

The below is taken from Wikipedia on nicotine.

“Research shows that by increasing the levels of dopamine within the reward circuits in the brain, nicotine acts as a chemical with intense addictive qualities. In many studies it has been shown to be more addictive than cocaine and heroin.”

So show them that next time someone tells you it’s easy.

My problem was I did not really want to give up I enjoyed smoking, I was not naive I knew I was killing myself but really didn’t care. For me I need a real good reason to stop and one day I was playing in the lounge with my 1 year old son and it hit me

“Do I want to see my son for an extra 10-20 years of his life?”

Or

“Do I want my son to think that smoking is cool?”

That was it my focus for giving up was my son and I think that was the main reason I am now 6 months clear and now class myself as a none smoker from a 20 a day guy.

How is hard actually is it

Well that’s a tough question so I’m going to break it down into 4 weeks. I kept a diary of how I felt for those 4 weeks and what I did to help myself through it.

Week 1 – 1 week before stopping

The day I decided to stop I set a date. If I recall correctly it was a Friday. I remember saying to myself “This time next week I will stop smoking FOREVER”. I’ve got to admit at the time I wasn’t convinced about my own statement but I set the date. I decided not to tell anyone I was stopping until that day came. Before I had told people I was stopping smoking and I used to get the “Oh 1 more day as a smoker”,  “Oh 12 more hours as a smoker” and it got so annoying that I was stressed before I stopped smoking, so this time I kept quiet.

The funny thing when you are planning to stop is the amount you smoke before you stop. I was a 20 a day but found myself hammering 40 like my body was stocking up….

In between smoking all these cigs I created myself a calendar. It was your usual calendar but on each day I worked out how much money I would have saved from stopping smoking for that long. E.g. By day 7 I had saved £35.70. I kept this in a draw ready to put up the first day of quitting. But I also went and looked at it throughout the week just to motivate myself.

As the days passed I found myself doubting that I could quit on the day as my will power has never been that great to be honest. It helped that I created a list of my reasons for stopping smoking while I was still smoking, previously I had done a list of reasons after I had stopped and it’s hard to find reasons when all you want is that one more cig.

Tips for the first week (pre giving up)

Do a calendar and write how much you will save each day I did mine for 10 weeks and at the end of my 10 weeks it said I would have £357.00!!! now that’s quite motivating in itself Get yourself a roses tin or something similar. This is where you will put the money you would normally spend on cigs each day. Write reasons to stop while you’re still smoking (trust me it’s easier) Set a date to stop. If at all possible get someone to stop with you.

Week 2

The big day arrived. Hours before stopping I was chain smoking. I remember the time I was to stop it was 6pm on Friday night and to be honest I was dreading it, it was an hour before I was to stop and I was still not convinced I could see it through.

I had my last cig at 5.55pm on Friday and the strange thing was it was probably the worst one I ever had it just didn’t give me the same feeling, maybe it was because it was the last one and I rushed it or because the expectation of the last cig didn’t reach the highs I hoped for.

6pm came and went. I usually had a cig every hour or so and it was like an alarm clock in my head DING time for a smoke. I decided to stick to routine, I had always smoked outside and not in the house so I decided to go outside for 5 minutes when I wanted a smoke, take some deep breaths and then come back in and do what I was doing.

The first night I decided to make it a little easier on myself and I hit the sack at 11.

Waking up the next day was hell, the smoke I knew I would miss most was the morning one, it was the one that kick started my mind and body into the day ahead. Ironic as it is it the first smoke was like the choke on a car, it got me going.

I mustered through the day sometimes reaching for my smokes and realising they were not there, dragging myself outside, looking at my list. I wanted to get through the first day. It was hard and the day seemed longer without smokes. I kept looking at another list I found on the internet thinking to myself that this WAS making me better even though I felt terrible.

Within 20 minutes your blood pressure and pulse returns to normal. Within 8 hours nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in blood reduce by half, oxygen levels return to normal and circulation improves. Within 24 hours carbon monoxide and nicotine are eliminated from the body. Within 48 hours the ability to taste and smell improves. Within 3 days your breathing becomes easier as your bronchial tubes begin to relax. Within a few weeks your fingers lose their yellow stains and your skin looks better. Within 1 month your appearance improves – skin loses its greyish pallor and becomes less wrinkled. Within 3-9 months coughing and wheezing declines. Within 1 year the risk of heart attack reduces by half compared to that of a smoker. Within 10 years the risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker. Within 15 years your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a non-smoker.

I have to be honest and say the first 3-4 days didn’t get any easier. I got as far as the local shop numerous times to buy smokes before turning round and belittling myself for been weak.

Obviously by this point I had told friends and family that I had stopped, and I m told that I was very difficult to live with for a few weeks particularly weeks 1 and 2. I had mood swings I was easily wound up, the slightest thing and I would snap. Most of this with me anyway was because I was looking for an excuse to have a smoke. I figured if I started an argument with my partner over something I could have a smoke and blame her for starting again for arguing with me.

It’s very strange what we are prepared to do for that stick of poison… The thing you have to do though is when it comes to that shall I have just one more is to calm yourself down take some deep breaths look at your list and remember that the urges only last a matter of minutes.

Towards the end of the week I did not feel that much better and I had not seen much change but the people around me had.

I had stopped going outside as much I was going out every 2-3 hours now instead of every hour Although I talked about wanting a cig an awful lot I’m told as the week went on it got less I stopped coming up with excuses to start smoking again towards the end of the week. I didn’t smell of smoke which pleased my partner. I managed to get through a movie without having to pause it and go for a smoke.

These were all little things that I didn’t really notice but other people did, there were many more.

Tips for the second week

I personally found this the hardest week. I was stopping something that I had been doing for nearly 16 years. I felt different this time though and my fears of not been able to keep it up diminished day by day

Every day you get through without smoking congratulate yourself. Keep putting the money saved each day in your tin. It helps in the coming weeks as it starts to get fuller and fuller Use any support you can get be in patches, gum, talking to people Your biggest support should be your family and friends Although hard and most of the time you will be thinking I’m always going to feel awful now I don’t have cigs IT DOES GET BETTER TRUST ME Keep referring to that list of reasons. Tick off each day on your calendar Tell people you don’t smoke not that you’re trying to stop. You need to convince yourself that you’re a non smoker

Week 3

This week was by no means easy, Days seemed to drag I felt like a part of me was missing, I was still cranky and snappy and most of all I still missed that first smoke (I still do occasionally).

But after about day 9 something strange started to happen.

The previous 9 days I had been thinking about cigs at least every couple of minutes but on this particular day I was sat at my computer a couple of  hours after waking up sending an email when I suddenly realised I hadn’t even THOUGHT about a smoke for the past hour and half. Now to non smokers that may not sound long but to a smoker and definitely to a smoker giving up that’s a LONG time.

Well I was very happy and as the days of week 2 went on this happened more often, it started happening 2-3 times a day.

It wasn’t until the end of week 2 that I also started to notice that I was finding it easier to breathe as well. I could run around the garden with the football for 10-15 minutes before collapsing in a heap compared to when I was smoking when I could run for 30 seconds before feeling like I was having a heart attack.

The times I snapped at people decreased, I was happier and generally pleased with myself towards the end of week 2 that I had got this far, my previous best was 48 hours!!!!.

The one thing that did change for me was my sense of smell. I am not joking when I say I could smell cigarette smoke everywhere. I even went through a stage at the start of the week of walking right past or standing next to smokers stood outside just to get a whiff I think in a strage way this helped me. I must admit I occasionally do now but not for the same I want a smoke reasons, I don’t care what anyone says about the smell of cigarette smokes I still occasionally like the smell of a lit smoke…

Tips for the third week

You should have proof in your head by now that you can live without smokes, think how well you have done every time you fancy a smoke. Go and look in your tin occasionally for motivation you should have a nice little stash piling up Try if you can to avoid alcohol for just another week or so Again as before refer to that list Find a hobby that takes up your time Reward yourself with the money you have saved if you wish or save it for a few weeks and spend it on something big, Even if money is tight SPEND IT YOURSELF. It is money you have never had before and you have always got by so treat yourself

Week 4

Now week 3 for me was brilliant. I’m not going to say I didn’t want a smoke as I still did between 5-10 times a day but the urges were nowhere near as strong as they were. My tin was getting fuller I was now making the most of the extra 2 hours a day I had that I used to fill with smoking.

The urges were less, a lot of my moodiness was going and I did actually feel healthier but most of all towards the end of week 3 I felt PROUD that I had got this far.

People say don’t consider yourself a non smoker till you have stopped 6 months blah blah blah. Ignore that consider yourself a non smoker and be proud if it the moment you feel you are a non smoker.

What is it like for me 6 months on?

Do I still occasionally fancy a smoke? Yes I fancy one but I don’t really need one, I think it’s more I miss it then need nicotine.

I feel healthier and happier than I did before and I am a lot better off. It is probably one of the better things I will do in my life.

I have no problem with people who don’t want to quit smoking it’s up to each of us to choose what we want to do with our lives not someone else. If you enjoy smoking are aware of the risks but still have no reason to give up then don’t.

If you do have a reason there is no better feeling than been able to tell people that you won your battle against the nicotine monster and best of all with a little luck I will get to spend an extra few years with my little boy.

I hope you enjoyed this brief article on my experiences of stopping smoking and it offers you some help in your battle

Exercise moderately. Regular exercise helps. Joining an exercise group provides a healthy activity and a new routine. Set several goals that you want to reach and reward yourself for reaching your goals.

Take deep breaths. Distract yourself. When cravings hit, do something else immediately, such as talking to someone, getting busy with a task, or taking deep breaths. You can use a simple meditation technique to calm down your body too. When you get a craving, sit down and empty your mind. Breathe in and out, slowly and deeply several times until you feel calmer.

As any smoker knows and anybody else can see, smoking is an extraordinarily difficult thing to give up.

More addictive than heroin we hear, or I’ve tried but….from a friend who gave up before, as they pick up a new cigarette.

It is not only the physical addiction, but also the social aspect of the habit that is difficult for the smoker to break.

The routine becomes part of the fabric of their day, be it stepping outside for a first cigarette, sitting in a pub with a pint and beer and smoke with a friend, or just the daily chat with the friendly tobacconist: once these moments are woven into the fabric of our lives the habit becomes more and more difficult to break.

The medical profession advise a wide range of treatments that should help you to quit smoking, mainly related to drugs and other prescription items.

While the profit model for the suppliers of this range of patches, gums, and replacement therapies is easy to see, the effectiveness for the average smoker-to-quit is less clear.

In many cases the addiction to nicotine by cigarette is only replaced to addiction to nicotine by patch, and the underlying reasons for the smoker’s wanting to pick up their next cigarette remain un-altered.

And as a smoker finds them falling straight back onto habits that they know they would prefer to have let behind them but seem unable to, their belief in their own self determination and personal choice can start to wain.

And what is going on behind all of this? While the smoker ‘decides’ to quit the habit using their conscious mind, it is the unconscious mind that each time overrides this choice, and sees you reaching for yet another cigarette.

So how can you go about translating the choices made by your conscious mind to the sub-conscious one and making those choices stick?

Well one route to altering those decisions that we keep on making is by talking directly to the subconscious a skill known as hypnotherapy.

The smoker listens to the voice of the hypnotherapist, and becomes relaxed.  They sometimes fall asleep or become drowsy, but equally often feel themselves to be fully awake throughout.

The hypnotherapist makes what is known as ’suggestions’ to the smoker, and it is these that sinking more deeply into the smokers mind start to effect the real decision that the smoker makes at let’s call it ‘next cigarette time’.

Oddly enough the soon-to-be ex smoker finds themself in a strange situation:

-Their desire for that next cigarette is not what it used to be.

-The reasons for quitting that they have understood for so long, yet been unable to act on seem more important, and less easy to suspend from the mind for those critical moments prior to taking action.

-The strength of resolve that had previously crumbled so easily seems for no apparent reason to return.

How easy is it in this situation to feel  braver than before?

How easy to actually take the action that you had always hoped you would, and say No thanks I’m a non-smoker.

Surprised?  You probably will be, but that’s hypnotherapy to stop smoking!

Nicotine provides the addictive nature of cigarette smoking and does not cause disease or death.

In fact it’s medically proven to do you good.

When you know this fact it will help you stop smoking. Why?

Quite simply, the major reason most people cant give up is they cannot cope with nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

The fact is you don’t need to give nicotine up, you can simply take it outside of cigarettes if you have the craving.

How can nicotine do you good?

Keep in mind it only provides the addictive nature of smoking and the killers are some of the other 4,000 odd chemicals consumed.

Nicotine in organic form is known to improve our moods, attention and concentration due to its affect on the neuron transmitters in the brain.

For example, nicotine switches on the receptors on the surface of cells in parts of the brain, causing these neurons to release the Neuron transmitter dopamine, a chemical that gives feelings of pleasure.

Nicotine is the subject of intense medical research for treating a whole host of conditions including:

Depression, Altzeimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and attention disorders, to name a few.

You consume nicotine everyday even if you don’t smoke!

Fact is, nicotine is part of the food chain and contained in everyday foods such as:

Tomatoes, bell peppers, cauliflower, eggplant, chili peppers, and teas.

Nicotine does you no harm and actually has positive health benefits, so you don’t need to be afraid to take it.

There are already nicotine products to help such as:

Puffers, inhalers, gum and patches and new ones will be coming on the market not just to help smokers, but provide pure organic nicotine to the treat conditions we looked at above.

The first one

The first organic nicotine product is already out and is simply nicotine in water.

Originally aimed at smokers when they could not, or did not wish to smoke, it’s now taken by numerous non smokers for its health benefits.

Water is also a convenient and healthy method of delivery.

More products will follow in the near future as nicotine is seen outside of cigarettes as being, healthy and safe.

Each and every year in my private practice in Oxford, I see hundreds of people wishing to stop smoking. Along with doing Hypnotherapy with them and teaching them Self Hypnosis, I also give them a few tips to make sure that the transition into a happy and content non-smoker is a happy one. I recommend that the tips below be used following a session of Hypnosis or the use of a high-quality Stop Smoking Hypnosis recording.

So if you have picked your day to quit, you’re ready to begin. Here are my tips on becoming a happy and content non-smoker.

1.Drink plenty of water. By increasing the amount of water that you drink you will be increasing your chances of an easier transition to being a non-smoker. The nicotine (the drug which you are addicted to) that is in your body needs to be flushed out and an increase in the amount of water that you drink helps you to do just that. It also hydrates your body, which in turn will give you a greater sense of wellbeing and allow you to feel healthier – this could benefit you if you tended to feel a bit crabby after giving up previously.

2.Do something different and keep busy. In those first vital days, make sure that you keep busy, and do stuff that you like doing as this will keep you occupied and less likely to think about smoking. Maybe spend some time with your friends or family and go out for the day. To make sure that your habit stays broken, it may be helpful to break your routine for a few days. During their day a smoker will associate a lot of things with his or her smoking, such as, having a beer, driving the car and after having sex. Still do all of these things, however do them differently! For example – have your beer at a smoke free bar for a few days!

3.Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Just like drinking more water, eating healthily allows you to feel healthier and gives you a greater sense of wellbeing. This is great as in this frame of mind and body you are more likely to succeed as you are giving yourself more to loose! Try it – you will feel great!

So there you have it. These are not all of my tips; however they will certainly help to take the edge of giving up smoking for you. Good luck and enjoy your new healthier lifestyle!

Richard MacKenzie is an expert on Self Hypnosis. He is also the bestselling author or a book called Self-Change Hypnosis.

It’s tough to quit smoking. Some very smart and strong people have had their butts kicked by tobacco. If you have tried and failed a few times like most of us we actually become afraid to even try since we know how miserable it will make us. This is why we only succeed 3% of the time when we try to quit “cold turkey”. Although it is possible to quit without help the truth is that most of us need help to quit. If you are a tough guy you might think that you can do it with out any help, but experience has shown us that tough guys don’t quit any more often that us wimps.

I have stumbled across a brand new stop smoking aid. The active ingredient comes from a plant called Nicotiana attenuata also known as Indian tobacco. It’s a close relative to smoking tobacco and when taken with a skin patch it can block the withdrawal symptoms we all fear. When you are wearing the patch and decide to sneak a smoke it is no longer gratifying, in fact it makes you feel unpleasant and after a few times you find that you don’ t want to cheat and light up anymore. Since it is non-addictive you don’t get the same withdrawal surge that you get when stopping the nicotine patch. Also the cost is about a third lower than the nicotine patch. I particularly like the interesting dreams that occur as a side effect.

I quit smoking 192 days ago and I still, from time to time want a cigarette again. The urge is much milder than the first 10 days of quitting it’s fairly easy to ignore it and stick to the plan. If you really want to quit and can find an aid to get you through the first two weeks you can make it.

Vern Anderson is a famous smoker who is determined to quit. If you want to learn more about the herbal patch please visit my site at Herbal Patch
