These clips are from the BBC: Horizon documentary series entitled “We Love Cigarettes”. The advice Allen Carr gives is pretty good, it convinced me (a 5 year smoker) to quit cold turkey. It has been a couple months now and I’m still going strong.

Update:

It has been over one year since my last cigarette and I have never been tempted to look back. I really hope this simple advice has helped someone else.

Your decision to start smoking was probably the worst mistake of your life. Your decision to stop smoking, could quite possibly save your life.

The trouble is, it’s not easy to quit. That demon nicotine has a grip on you and will not let go without a fight. But you can’t let it win. You have to fight harder and dirtier if you’re going to beat it.

The biggest punch nicotine will throw at you once you quit, will be the craving. And let me tell you now, if you take it full on the chin, it’s gonna hurt!

There’s no way you’re going to stop it throwing the punches, it’s a fight remember?

But I’m going to show you a way to help you deflect the blows very effectively. And this technique is so simple, yet I believe so overlooked, you’re probably going to laugh at me. And best of all, it’s completely free.

When I successfully stopped smoking, this technique made the difference. I’d tried and failed countless times before. Now I know why.

OK, here goes. Allow me to set the scene.

You’ve stopped smoking and you’re watching TV (just as an example). Suddenly and completely out of the blue, Nick Otine throws a right hook at you. You really want a cigarette. No . . . that’s an understatement. You NEED a cigarette. You start imagining the hit at the back of your throat and in your lungs as, in your imagination, you inhale. Another right hook. Feels great, you think to yourself. I really miss that feeling. Oh no . . . an uppercut! Am I sure I really want to stop? I mean, I could smoke a little longer couldn’t I? A furry of jabs from old Nick and you’re reeling now. Perhaps it would be better to stop smoking at New Year. It would be much easier then because . . .

STOP! Do you see what’s happening? Old Nick is not just a great boxer, he’s a great persuader. He could sell ice to the Eskimos. I don’t know about you, but I had this dialog with myself countless times a day when I first stopped smoking. Then I found a way to protect myself, to keep my guard up. Sure, I’d get hit with the first punch, but no more after that. How?

I redirected my attention. What!? That’s it? I said you’d laugh didn’t I? But wait a second, I can’t overstate this: The greatest ally Nick Otine has is your attention.

Think about it. When the craving hits, do you do what I’ve described above? Do you drop your guard and invite Nick in so to speak. Do you remember the good old days with him? Let him get his feet under the table? It’s fatal.

I want you to do something next time the craving hits. Immediatley the first blow lands, think about something else. “What am I doing later, what shall I wear for the party on Saturday, where’s that book I was reading” . . . ANYTHING other than Nick.

You might not realise that you normally tease yourself relentlessly by allowing the negitive conversation to continue, but you do. It took me a long time to realise. But when I did realise and I stopped it in it’s tracks, the difference was amazing.

The cravings don’t last as long as you think. Before you know it, it’s gone. When the next one arrives just do the same again and again and again. You don’t have to go for a jog, clean the car, do the dishes or any other physical activity for this to work. You just need mental activity to divert the blows.

Don’t throw this idea away. TRY IT. Don’t give up. Keep doing it. You’ll be amazed at it’s effectiveness.

There has been extreme efforts to diminish smoking in America over the past two decades. Today one in every four men and one in five women still smoke. For those who never smoked, this is a befuddling fact. Smoking is a very hard habit to beat and hence the desire to stop smoking ought to come from the smoker himself. As any smoker can verify, giving up – and staying smoke-free – is one of the most difficult things to do. But if you are successful in
giving up smoking, it is not only one of the healthiest steps you can take, it also decreases your chances of dying from smoking or any related diseases. An estimated 400,000 Americans die every year from the effects of smoking and in general, a smoker has about twice as much chance of a heart attack as a non-smoker.
Smoking actually affects almost every part of the body – not just the heart and lungs, as is commonly believed – and the effects of stopping smoking can be dramatic and sudden. However, the human body is amazingly resilient and will begin to heal itself almost immediately. If you have some idea of what to expect after you quit smoking, it’s perhaps a little bit easier to deal with the effects.
Just twenty minutes or so after smoking their last cigarette, a person’s blood pressure will return to normal and after just two days of being smoke-free, the chances of having a heart attack will be reduced. The heart and lungs will begin to repair the damage caused to them by smoking. And after two days, a person who has just stopped smoking may also notice that their sense of smell and taste is more heightened – and may want to eat more, as food tastes better.
Immediately after quitting, a smoker may also experience some unpleasant symptoms which are perfectly normal – sore gums, coughing, irregularity and a temporary weight gain, which is caused by the body retaining fluids. Many ex-smokers also feel irritable or tired or find it difficult to sleep. It might make you feel better to know that these are all signs of nicotine being removed from your body – most of it will have gone completely within several days.
You will also have nicotine withdrawal symptoms and it’s during the first few days and weeks after quitting that you will have to fight the urge not to smoke. Symptoms of nicotine withdrawal often resemble a mild dose of the flu and can include any or all of the following – irritability, insomnia or fatigue, headache, sore throat, tightness in the chest, dry mouth and lack of concentration. These symptoms can be unpleasant – but they will pass.
After a few weeks, the worst symptoms of nicotine withdrawal will start to diminish and the whole process should become easier. You will find that circulation improves and you may also find that walking and exercising are easier as your body readjusts to its new and healthier state. You will still probably have the occasional craving for a cigarette, but after a few weeks, it is a little bit easier not to give in.
The noticeable effects on your body will continue during the first year or so – sinus congestion and coughing will decrease and you should find that you generally have more energy than when you smoked. The cilia, or tiny hairs, start to grow back in the lungs, helping to clean the lungs, processing mucus produced by the body and generally reducing the chances of infection. However, you will have to wait an estimated fifteen years before your chance of developing coronary heart disease is the same as that of a person who has never smoked.
Of course, the longer you are smoke-free, the easier it is to stay that way. After a few months or so, the physical longings for a cigarette will have diminished to a large extent, although you need to be careful not to lapse and have just one cigarette, which may then lead to another. And the long term effects of giving up smoking are something that shouldn’t be taken for granted – a far lower chance of getting cancer or heart disease and perhaps just as importantly, a feeling of accomplishment and pride.
