Why would the government support smoking years ago, and look down upon it now?

Was it the government or just companies? Also if it wasn’t the governement then why wouldn’t they stop the fake doctors telling people that it was a good idea?

They are making money from being against them:

the major cigarette companies agreed to settle state lawsuits against them by making annual payments to 46 states, DC and the U.S. Territories that will total more than $200 billion in just the first 25 years. Prior to the MSA, the major cigarette companies entered into similar settlement agreements, with even larger per-capita payments, with the four other states (MS, FL, TX, MN). Through 2005, the cigarette companies have already made tobacco payments to the states of more than $55 billion, including $7.5 billion in 2005 alone.

They got LOADS of money from tobacco companies and only spoke up because of ALL the evidence and outcrying. Must be more real doctors than fake ones out there.

You’re forgetting or ignoring the power of money. We’ve know for over a hundred fifty years that all tobacco products produce serious illness, but taxes on the sale of tobacco products is one of the most lucrative things the government has ever had going for it. You could well ask the same question regarding alcoholic drink. Politicians do not care about your health, but right now it’s politically correct to pretend that they do. All the while, they keep on pocketing truckloads of money from the tobacco industry. Cynical little rats, ain’t they?

Consumers were not protected with that much research back then… the government did not really know how harmful it was and had not forced the tobacco companies to really investigate the effects of it.
