These clips are from the BBC: Horizon documentary series entitled “We Love Cigarettes”. The advice Allen Carr gives is pretty good, it convinced me (a 5 year smoker) to quit cold turkey. It has been a couple months now and I’m still going strong.

Update:

It has been over one year since my last cigarette and I have never been tempted to look back. I really hope this simple advice has helped someone else.

Debi Austin started smoking at age 13. By the time she was in college, she smoked three packs a day. Debi was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx at age 42. She underwent successful surgery to remove the tumor, but unfortunately her vocal cords were removed as well. Debi had to learn to speak again. Four years after her surgery, while participating in a Laryngectomee’s support group, Debi was approached by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to film an anti-tobacco ad. Debi initially declined, but was eventually motivated to accept because of her desire that her 4-year old niece not follow in her footsteps. Four months after filming the ad and before it aired publically, Debi quit smoking for good.

Foreword When in 1872, eighty-four years ago, Dr. PB Randolph, Supreme Grand Master of the Rosicrucian Fraternity in America first published his book SOUL, THE SOUL WORLD he included in it, among other subjects, his treatise on the tobacco habit. At that period little thought had been given to tobacco and the harm that might result from it and there naturally was a great deal of scoffing, even among the medical profession, at his tirade against it. Times have changed since then. More and ever more physicians who are giving thought to, and investigation the effects of the tobacco habit, are being forced to agree with much that Dr. Randolph then said and published. This is the VOA Special English Development Report, , from voaspecialenglish.com | http World No Tobacco Day is celebrated each day on May thirty-first. The observance is meant to bring attention to the growing use of tobacco and its deadly effects. The World Health Assembly established the event in nineteen eighty-seven. This year, special attention is being given to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing to women and girls. The World Health Organization says tobacco kills nearly five and a half million people a year — another victim every six seconds. Tobacco use is a top cause of deaths worldwide. One billion people smoke. More than eighty percent of tobacco users live in low and middle income countries. The WHO says the tobacco industry has increasingly directed its marketing campaigns at women and girls. Women currently represent about twenty percent of smokers. But tobacco use among girls is increasing. Data collected from one hundred fifty-one countries show that about seven percent of young girls now smoke. That compares with twelve percent of boys. In some countries, however, the rates are almost equal. Almost one hundred seventy countries have signed a treaty called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The WHO is calling on those governments to ban tobacco advertising to the fullest extent possible and to do more to protect women. The agreement seeks to reduce the demand and supply of tobacco products. This year marks the fifth anniversary since the

House Chamber, Washington, DC April 2, 2009 M. Speaker: Today this house passed HR 1256, which takes tobacco regulation to a whole new level and at the same time imposes onerous new fees that will be passed on to consumers as higher prices. The entire debate on that bill was over what method government should use to do so. Before we close todays proceedings, I would like to offer a different perspective. Many years ago, author and commentator Bruce Herschensohn made this point. He said, for every pleasure in life, there is a corresponding risk. I think thats a universal truth: For every pleasure in life, there is a corresponding risk. And he pointed out that its true that with enough taxes, laws, restrictions, regulations, penalties and lectures, government can produce a virtually risk-free society. But it will also be one of the most colorless, pleasureless, tedious and miserable societies ever conceived by the mind of man. I believe that is the case. The health risks of smoking are real and they are well documented. Our schools rightly make a concerted effort to inform every child of the health risks associated with tobacco products, and they do a good job of it. Our government warns every adult of the risks associated with tobacco products, and they do a good job of it, too. As a result, I dont believe there is a single individual in the United States who doesnt well and fully comprehend the health risks of tobacco. But once those warnings are issued, how much further
